Lacrosse Goal Equipment Checklist

Lacrosse Equipment List

There's no sport like lacrosse - and that includes the equipment you need to play and train. Lacrosse is one of the fastest-growing sports in North America, and whether you're new to the game or gearing up for high school and prep school play, Bownet® can help you #TrainLikeAPro. Our guide to youth lacrosse equipment is a must when getting ready for the season ahead.

Lacrosse Sport Equipment

There are four positions in a lacrosse game. An attacker, midfielder and defender all have pretty much the same equipment needs. Goalies have a few special requirements that we'll go over later. There are also some variations between girls' and boys' lacrosse equipment. For now, here is the basic lacrosse equipment list for players on offense or defense:

  • Lacrosse Stick - The most basic tool for any lacrosse player. The size and shape of the stick head depend on the position you're playing.
  • Gloves - A good pair of gloves protect the hands from errant passes and can also improve a player's grip on the stick.
  • Mouth Guard - This is mandatory in most youth leagues to help protect the mouth and face.
  • Cleats - Lacrosse cleats are similar to baseball cleats with a "toe cleat" in front that can dig into the turf, which helps players accelerate. They are usually a mid-cut cleat to provide ankle support.
  • Lacrosse Equipment Bag - A player bag makes storing and carrying gear a lot easier. It also protects against weather damage.

Differences Between Boys' & Girls' Lacrosse

Boys' lacrosse is a contact sport while girls' lacrosse is a non-contact sport. As such, lacrosse equipment for girls and boys varies somewhat. Here are the key distinctions:

  • Helmets and Padding - All boys' lacrosse players wear a helmet, shoulder pads and elbow pads, and most also wear rib pads. In girls' lacrosse, typically only the goalie wears a helmet and padding (though many leagues require protective goggles). The gloves in girls' lacrosse are also a lot slimmer.
  • Sticks - Boys lacrosse players can use a short stick (40-42 inches) for offense or a long pole (52-72 inches) for defense. Girls' sticks range from 35.5 to 43.25 inches regardless of position. The head of boys' lacrosse sticks also has a deeper pocket and can be strung with mesh, whereas girls' sticks have shallower pockets and must be traditionally strung.

Lacrosse Goalie Equipment

In lacrosse, goalie is the most potentially dangerous position, which means that in addition to the equipment mentioned above, we also recommend the following:

  • A throat guard that attaches to the helmet.
  • A chest protector to shield your torso from hard shorts.
  • Protective goalie pants worn under the uniform shorts.
  • Shin guards to protect your lower legs from bruising.
  • Goalie-specific gloves with added thumb and forefinger padding.
