The Ultimate Guide to Outfitting Yourself for Baseball

Whether you've just started playing baseball or are getting ready for the College World Series, the right baseball equipment can help you play at an elite level. Our ultimate guide to baseball gear covers the essential items to #TrainLikeaPro. From hitting to fielding, Bownet® wants every aspiring pro to have the high-quality tools they need to become a five-tool player.

1. Baseball Bats

Baseball bats come in many forms. Most youth leagues up to college require aluminum or alloy bats, but all pro leagues still use wood bats. A bat should reach from the ground to your palm while standing straight. Heavier bats produce more power while lighter bats offer more speed and control.

2. Baseball Glove

Unless you're a designated hitter, every ballplayer needs a glove. Infielder gloves are smaller and have a shallow pocket so players can transfer the ball faster. Outfield gloves have longer gloves and deeper pockets to secure fly balls. Both first basemen and catchers use a large mitt with extra padding.

3. Training Nets

A portable baseball net lets you spend more time practicing. Instead of having to constantly chase down fly balls, pitches and cutoff throws, the net basket will catch them to make it easier to practice in any location. There are many types of nets, including the Big Mouth X® hitting net and In-Fielder throwing net.

4. Baseball Cleats

You'll need the right footwear to maximize traction on the diamond. Baseball shoes have special studs on the sole and toe that give players traction on dirt and grass. The studs are typically made of molded plastic or metal; check with your league to see if metal cleats are allowed before purchasing them.

5. Protection Screens

An assortment of baseball protection nets will shield pitchers, fielders, coaches and spectators from hard hits or wayward throws. Part of being an elite player is staying on the field, and these screens help you do that - and also keep the neighbors happy.

6. Training Balls

While regulation baseballs are certainly important, training baseballs will help you reach the next level. Depending on the design, they can provide feedback on your hitting contact, assist with pitching mechanics or build strength. Many are made of foam or plastic so you can train indoors.

7. Batting Gloves and Helmet

This baseball gear is a must for both performance and protection. Baseball batting gloves help you maintain a firm grip on the bat, giving you more power and control - plus a little bit of protection against a stinger. Even more important is a batting helmet to cover your most important asset (your head).

8. Gear Bags

What's just as important as great baseball accessories? A great baseball bag to put them in. Player and coach bags come in many styles to carry your gear. Use them for bats, cleats, jerseys, tablets, mouthguards and more. From practice backpacks to travel team bags, the right luggage helps you get to the field.
